Norwood is focused on the preservation of the traditional music and culture of the American Southeast as is reflected in his music: an original blend of traditional and modern elements bound together with the primal pulse of a backwoods, moonshine-drenched Saturday night. Norwood's sound is authentic deep blues that still manages to resonate with audiences of of its more modern offspring, helping to bring roots music into a new era.
HOBO NEPHEWS OF UNCLE FRANK w/ Chris Steiner (of Mayhem String Band) & Patrick McClary (of Daybreakdown), $5

DescriptionThe Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank's critically acclaimed 2007 album Sing! will be remembered as a landmark recording in the roots music resurrection happening in Minnesota. The recording is mostly live and raw, the playing sharp and dirty and the songs are as emotional and bold as they are vivid and well crafted. The Hobo Nephews new album Traveling Show (release Sep 1, 2009) is a confident and exciting evolution of the same formula as the road hardened trio of drummer Paul Grill and the brother songwriting team of Ian and Teague Alexy eloquently trace the emotional ups and downs of life on the road over a roller coaster of dirty roadhouse stomps, visceral ballads, rock n' roll burners, country-blues shuffles and most things in between. Most bands lack a strong singer/songwriter with originality or true grit. Hobo Nephews is the rare group that can boast having two songwriters of style and substance. The Alexy brothers grew up in the New Jersey shore town of Somers Point - the town where Bob Dylan hired The Band before Ian and Teague were born. A simple twist of fate brought them to Dylan's hometown of Duluth, Minnesota where they started the band as a duo in 2005 with a revolving cast of roots musicians helping them celebrate their original songs alongside inspired renditions of Leadbelly, Mississippi John Hurt and most importantly Woody Guthrie. They did their first tour to the rocky mountains in a Honda Civic hatchback in which they survived the 10,000 foot I-70 mountain pass in the middle of a blizzard. The lion's share of Traveling Show was recorded in three marathon days at Rough Magic Studios in Brooklyn NY. Marco Benevento – who the All Music Guide calls "an outrageously talented musician" - electrifies three tracks putting his organ, wurlitzer and circuit bent toys in an exciting new Americana context. Pedal steel player Jon Graboff (Ryan Adams and The Cardinals) adds his signature sound to two songs while members of fellow Minnesota roots music troubadours and frequent collaborators Trampled By Turtles add impeccable violin, mandolin and banjo. Traveling Show will come with a 60 minute film, Moments and Truths, that documents the making of the record in New York City as well as sights, sounds and encounters from all over the country. Directed and edited by filmmaker/photographer Joshua Priestley, and partially shot by the band themselves, Moments And Truths is a uniquely stylized film that captures transient life in a way not previously seen in the banal climate of reality tv-esque band documentaries. It also captures the band at an exciting period as their musicianship, songwriting and musical vision rise to new heights.
Joal Rush

DescriptionJust when you start thinking that no one is making good rock-n-roll music anymore, you find someone who amazes you with their style of straight-out rock music. One such musician that is currently making that style of straight-out rock that is sadly all-too-uncommon is Joal Rush. In 2004, Joal Rush released his debut EP, Delightful Things. With that release, Joal started making a name for himself. The reason for that is the CD started receiving critical acclaim from those who reviewed the release. Along with praise from the critics, Joal started gaining a following from his fans. Since releasing Delightful Things , Joal has enjoyed a bit of success as good things started happening. The Charleston, SC musician has shared then stage with the likes of Edwin McCain, Will Hoge and Styx; Joal has had his music added to XM Radio's Unsigned channel 52 where it has become a fixture of the station; and he has had his song Carry On put on the Awarestore.com Ear Snacks Vol. 6 compilation. After having success with Delightful Things and receiving all of the accolades that have come with it, Joal Rush is back with his second release, Imagination. With this new EP, Joal has taken his writing style and improved upon it, giving the songs on Imagination more power than before. The new EP contains 6 great songs. The best tracks on the release are, in my opinion, Imagination, Living a Lie, and Bleed. The CD even comes with a ballad, You Are, that helps to wrap up the release. Joal has put out a great rock release. His style would belong with groups who were around before there were styles of rock called Alternative or Grunge. His music seems a little out of place with what is on the airwaves right now, but that is because the majority of the groups out there right now follow whatever trends are big at the time and refuse to veer away from the mainstream. It takes courageous musicians like Joal Rush to take a chance at releasing music that is not pigeon-holed by today's radio formats. If you like pre-Alternative rock music, Joal Rush is making music just for you. You can check out Joal Rush and his music at www.joalrush.com and at www.MySpace.com/joalrush.

DescriptionOriginally from Fairview Heights, IL, outside St. Louis, MO, Dom Wier is a songwriter/artist based in Nashville, TN. He played the local St. Louis, MO rock scene for several years in different bands including Tainted Wisdom before moving to Nashville, TN in late 2005. He quickly began playing acoustic gigs in the Nashville area and getting involved in the songwriting community. He spent time learning from many other talented individuals in the industry and writing a lot of songs, but always missed playing live shows with a full band. So to make that happen, he ventured out on his own and recorded an EP. As a new solo artist, Dom is combining an exciting mixture of roots rock and country. The songs are sincere, heartfelt and emotionally honest. Since releasing his first EP “No Boundaries” in 2008, Dom has been playing live shows with his band and connecting with audiences at venues all over the Midwest and the Southeast. With a new EP entitled “Jaded Dreamer” released in April 2009, it is evident that Dom has arrived as an “artist” in the most true sense of the word. With all of the saturation in today’s music market, Dom Wier is definitely an undeniable talent worth paying attention too.

DescriptionOkay, here’s the skinny: The scheming corporate vampires and piggy-bankers have waddled away in a silent-but-deadly cloud after gobbling their fills at the public trough, leaving the rest of us poor schmos to pick the corn outta their poop and call it lunch. The whole stinkin’ economy is burning with the eternal, icy blue flame of corruption, and we’re down here with…what? LIFE, for one great big thing—HEART and SOUL and ROCK’N’ROLL, and we got Ed Anderson and his able co-conspirators in Backyard Tire Fire to remind us that ALL OF THAT counts for way more than all the high-ticket stuff you can sneak out the back door. With their fifth full-length disc, Good To Be, Backyard Tire Fire have achieved one of those big-time, long-haul records that matter far more than the sum of its considerable parts—and not via grandiose, larger-than-life lyrical imagery but through blue-collar, common sense miniatures that remind us of the simple beauty present in mundane, daily, person-to-person experience—a reminder that the hard work and struggle that these times are so dead-set about avoiding are the only actual treasures, the only worthwhile endeavors that bear fruit of substance. Which is NOT to say that Good To Be is yet another one of those one-dimensional, granola-rootsy, rustic Americana takes on post-Uncle Tupelo barn-board rock; there is a taste of that, to be sure, but Anderson & Co. have spread the stylistic court with a rich, ever-expanding palette of aural rock ‘n’ roll colors and textures that tap into bouncy, Kinks-meet-Squeeze Brit pop-rock, Tom Petty-styled Southern rock, Beatle-esque majesty, intimate balladry, chiming folk-rock and heartland/populist chest-pounders. Bearing a consistent message of empathy, humanity and hope, Good to Be is a triumph of Anderson’s own thirteen year journey as a rock and roller. Based in Bloomington, Illinois, Backyard Tire Fire have worked the national circuit tirelessly, sharing stages with fellow-travelers Cracker, the Reverend Horton Heat, Govt. Mule, Alejandro Escovedo, James McMurtry and Los Lobos. Good To Be, due to drop February 16th on the band’s own Kelsey Street Records (distributed by Thirty Tigers/Red), was recorded in luxurious, hand-tooled analog with Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin producing.

DescriptionBradley' s circus In its still short existence Bradley' s Circus has already stolen the haerts of many a music-lover. Bradley' s circus is a band whit a very own interpretation in style as in sound of a type of music that they themselves typify as contemporary roots. And it's contemporary as night follows day. Backed up by the spinning upright bass and rolling drums of Toine Stout and BeeWee Nederkoorn. Mattanja Joy Bradley has a splendid powerful hoarse voice and is a feast for the eye. When she sings you first take a step back to have yourself then dragged into her story. Lidewij Veenhuis is one of the few female bluesharpists in the Netherlands and perhaps even Europe and masters the art of bringing forth both beautiful soli as blowing throbbing rhythms. With Mattanja Joy Bradley she forms the double female front of the circus. An show by Bradley's Circus is an experience. Sometimes you are lured in a small song, sometimes you go off the road in an exuberant rootsgroove with splattering gitar, bluesharp and a wild Mattanja Bradley. DescriptionJohnson's Crossroad is taking their love of the old time mountain music, bluegrass, and the Texas singer/songwriters of the 1970's and putting their own stamp on the ever widening and increasingly popular 'Americana' genre. The band was born in the bars of small town Lewisburg, WV. Johnson's Crossroad performed the old songs they love and began to craft their own material. As audiences began to grow founding members Paul Johnson and Keith Minguez decided to head south over the Blue Ridge Mountains to the budding music scene of beautiful Asheville, NC where they found like-minded musicians and formed a touring band. The debut album "Blood in Black and White" brings together some of Asheville's finest musicians to perform JXR's original material. The album is steeped in the traditional country themes of lost love, lost fortune, lost time, and overcoming hardships, but Johnson's Crossroad have clearly found a unique voice. With "Blood in Black and White" they give country music fans an alternative to the "polished" sound, though staying true to the roots that have made country music great.

DescriptionCharleston SC’s quartet Milhouse are rapidly building a reputation as one of the most eclectic bands to break the surface in years. With such a distinct and an energetic live show, Milhouse draws on a unique combination of instruments and influences to create a sound that is unclassifiable. Composed of four best friends Matt Herring, Dusty Painter, Cory Jarrett, and Lonnie Root this quartet manages to intertwine the evolution of classical music to the sounds of modern music with influences of My Morning Jacket, Keller Williams, The Blues Brothers to Jason Mraz and Damien Rice. With such broad influences and instruments not consistent to the rock music genre the creative efforts of the songs and arrangements becomes an influential strength to the eclectic sound. Milhouse has toured and played with: JJ.Grey and Mofro, Wild Sweet Orange, The Clarks, Cowboy Mouth, Tyler Ramsey, Zach Deputy, Outformation, Zac Brown Band, NeedtoBreathe, The Blue Dogs, Moses Mayfield, Scare Crow Collection, and Barefoot Manner. In January 2008, Milhouse entered Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville NC with respected producer Danny Kadar who is well recognized for his production and engineering for acts such as My Morning Jacket, Iggy Pop, Avett Brothers, and Arizona. The goal for the six track EP entitled “a collection of rare birds” was to produce a record that will capture the live and organic chemistry of eclectic quartet. . "We didn't hire studio musicians or add to or change our sound." Herring explains. "…in the end it was me, Dusty, Cory and Lonnie; the people in this band, creating the music we love." he adds confidently," It will always be the Milhouse family."

It just takes one verse of swaying to the acoustic rhythms before you are singing along the next time the chorus rolls around. DescriptionJennie Arnau creates a unique blend of New York-nurtured South Carolina-born Grassroots rock. Her original blend of Americana, Alt-Country and rock along with her bold and bittersweet voice have lead more than one critic to describe her as a cross between Neil Young and Martina McBride. It's a sly underground sound that's born of urban grit and rowdy southern sensibilities and perfectly suits this native South Carolina singer. It's not a voice that has gone unnoticed either. CHASING GIANTS, set for a April 13th release on MRI, is the follow up to Jennie's 2007 release, MT. PLEASANT, which Joe Levy of Rolling Stone hailed as "her most fully realized set of songs yet. If you care about the struggle for love and happiness - and who among us doesn't? - This one's for you." Determined to find a producer who would understand her alchemy of grassroots Americana and indie rock, Jennie enlisted the help of Trina Shoemaker (Sheryl Crow, Queens of the Stone Age, Emmylou Harris). The two, along with recording engineer Phil Palazzolo (Neko Case, The New Pornographers), quickly began work on CHASING GIANTS.

DescriptionLindsay Holler sings and plays guitar. her voice moves onto the sidewalk through a cracked upstairs window on dusky afternoons. it smells you with its tongue, pensively considers, and strikes. In clubs and theatres - its the same. On some occasions it caresses; other times accuses. When amplified it can be seen on the air ... then we all drown. Holler lives in Charleston, South Carolina. She hails the South as home and has lived in New Orleans and New York; she studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston. The music's current state of evolution is supported by a little twang and a little late-night clarity. The new EP, Helltembre, contains six originals, each displaying Hollers succinct penwomanship, which treads the trammels of broken relations and lost love. With the addition of Nick Jenkins on drums, Sam Sfirri on piano and percussion, Bill Carson on guitar, and Ben Wells on bass, they have created a sound fusing americana with gritty textures and dark lyrics. Holler cites influences from the likes of Tom Waits, Gram Parsons, Nina Simone and Neil Young - preferring genre straddlers, categorical misfits and indefinables

DescriptionThe whiskey bottle's not a surprising guest in Mac Leaphart's abode. The dregs of a handle of Jack Daniels sits in the corner, next to a dull silver flask. After all, Leaphart has penned a healthy dose of forlorn country tunes and lyrical one-liners. But the 32-year-old songwriter isn't quite like the brown-liquor-drenched romantics he both admires and emulates. "Whiskey's good for ideas, but I can't really write while I'm drinking," says Leaphart, who wakes up early, jogs daily, and spends about two hours each morning journaling. "I really feel like I have writer's block more than I don't. I guess if I didn't, I'd write 100 songs a week."

DescriptionMy War Cry is Amor Josh Roberts and the Hinges' new album is ready for you. Produced by Alan Moon and Recorded at Tom and Julie Hall's 1860 Plantation House, Josh's Farmhouse, and Vinyl-Atlanta, "My War Cry is Amor" is a cinematic, emotional, and literary Thanksgiving dinner of rock. Although the songs stand powerfully alone, this is truly an ALBUM that explores the dualities of Man and God, love and war, and true life and death, all with virtuoso musicianship and full of the kind of happy accidents that made it exciting for the band to make and will keep it exciting for you to listen to. Josh Roberts and the Hinges got help from some ragingly talented friends in the making of "My War Cry is Amor." Ryan Monroe (now with Band of Horses, formerly with Josh in Captain Easy), Chris Conner, Nicole Hagenmeyer (both of The South), and Amy Deaderick (formerly of the freakin' Rome Philharmonic) made huge contibutions to the richness of the record.

Trees Leave, $5
09-24-2010
22:30

DescriptionAny songwriter would have to agree that a feel-good song may fall out of the sky on a breezy, sunny day, but it may prove a daunting task for some. Most artists thrive on bringing their pain and misery into their work and, ironically, capture something beautiful that speaks volumes about the human condition by tapping into the dark realities of their lives. It may seem that there are no feel-good songs on "The Gospel of Hurt", the newest album by acclaimed Americana/Folk Rock duo, Trees Leave. But take a closer listen to this batch of emotional tunes and see what it's like to hurt so good. Trees Leave have traveled the nation for the last 2 years in support of their haunting debut album, "Run". From that album came the neo-Bluegrass number, "Water Falls" which placed the duo as a finalist in the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest held at Merlefest every year. They were placed in the Bluegrass category, but even contest host, Jim Lauderdale, didn't know how to classify the song. "It's just different, in a good way", he said. That's exactly how Trees Leave likes to be described: different. Over the years, they have crafted a sound that marries their Bluegrass roots with their love of Rock, Blues and Traditional Country music. Trees Leave’s preferred brand of Americana mixes raw, emotional lyrics with equally jarring melodies and instrumentation. Whether they are plugged in or sitting on the back porch, the urgency in their music and performance is hard to ignore. Usually performing as a duo, they share rhythm guitar duties when the other is impressing on their signature instruments. Cobi Ferguson’s polarizing guitar riffs and Wyatt Espalin’s fiery fiddle solos add spice to their live performances and keeps audiences guessing what will come next. When the venue suits it, Trees Leave performs with a backing band and their songs do not hesitate to meet them at the next level. The listener is caught off guard with the twists of irony, winks of wit and sighs of sorrow of the characters in their songs. Trees Leave have studied the architects of Americana music and are not ashamed of borrowing from their influences such as Ryan Adams and Whiskeytown, Gillian Welch, the Counting Crows and new Folk-Pop act, the Weepies. They would never call themselves Bluegrass players, but they love taking turns on fiddle and mandolin-laced folk tunes and often try to recreate the sounds of old world music with their tight harmonies and interesting interpretations of old standards. Trees Leave has had the privilege of sharing the stage with the following artists: Patty Loveless, The Greencards, Sam Bush, Angie Aparro, Tim O'Brien, The Infamous Stringdusters, Irons In The Fire, The Lovell Sisters, Mac Powell (Third Day), Shane and Shane, Trevor Morgan, Randall Goodgame, Brianna Lane, Kort McCumber, Florez, Joan Wyatt Band, Braden Land, Shelby James and many more great artists. Trees Leave has been featured on Georgia's Public Radio with Edgar Treiguts and on Prescott, Arizona's Folk Sessions.

DescriptionHis father's legacy lives on in the tools of his art. Big Bill has both Muddy's touring amp and the guitars on which he composed some of his earliest works. More importantly, Bill carries Muddy's spirit and love for the blues, and says he feels a spiritual bond with his father when he's on stage. "My dad had a reputation for being a very dignified person, a very proud man. He gave us kids all a certain inner strength to go out and do whatever we needed to do." Musically, his father's influence came somewhat later. "Whenever I got the chance to hear him, it struck me strongly." But Bill didn't start off with the idea of being a professional musician until years later. It wasn't until after his father's death in 1983 that Bill decided to explore his musical heritage. "It gave me such an empty feeling, like someone had pulled the bones out of my body, like something was missing. I never sat down and asked all the questions I had for him. Now I feel like I get a chance to talk to him through my music." This is a CD Release party for his "Born Lover". Davis Coen opens beginning at 9pm. Admission is $10.
