Description“My new definition of underground: singer-guitarist Daniel Hutchens and guitarist Eric Carter, friends since they met in elementary school...and, for the past 23 years, the sturdy, stubborn axis of the Athens, Georgia band Bloodkin...on BABY, THEY TOLD US WE WOULD RISE AGAIN, Bloodkin are at a hot peak in their odyssey, opening with the hypnotic hell of “The Viper,” a catalog of addictions checked off by Hutchens in a belly-to-the-bar drawl against a seventies-Neil Young tornado of banjo, dirty guitars and prairie-chapel organ. The spike and clash of Carter and Eric Martinez’s guitars in “Wait Forever” suggest Keith Richards and Ron Wood--armed with Civil War bayonets.” -DAVID FRICKE in ROLLING STONE “BABY, THEY TOLD US WE WOULD RISE AGAIN is the title of Bloodkin’s new album and it’s truly one of the best damned Rock and Roll albums that I have heard in many a year...life-affirming rock and roll in the grandest tradition...one of the most under-rated bands on Earth.” -PATTERSON HOOD of DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS "From the very beginnings of Widespread Panic to today and beyond, Bloodkin has been one of our greatest influences. Danny and Eric's music has a consistent blend of poetry, intestinal fortitude, and song-craftmanship that I envy. I can hope their example sinks in to my own approach to music. We can voyeuristically cover their songs during our sets but ultimately it's best to listen to Bloodkin and surrender to what is coming at you––pure intention in the form of music. Bloodkin's presence in, and their approach to, rock & roll or whatever you call it––is as much of what makes up the backbone of the Athens music story as any other band that has come through this town. That's what Danny and Eric mean to me." -JOHN BELL of WIDESPREAD PANIC "We had Vic's song and a Danny Hutchens song [on DIRTY SIDE DOWN]," Schools says. "That's when we started talking about the fact that we were covering a song from Vic and a song from Danny, so why shouldn't we do one by Jerry [Joseph]? These are the three biggest songwriting influences in our band's life.” -DAVE SCHOOLS of WIDESPREAD PANIC in BLURT ONLINE “Slept on for 20-plus years, these roiling Southern rawkers plunge you into a guitar-moaning maelstrom rife with sagas about snorting coke and putting a gun in your mouth and living to ham- fist another round of margaritas.” -CHARLES AARON in SPIN “[Baby...] is a terrific record, highly recommended also by Patterson Hood...who has been a fan since he first saw them in the mid-90’s, when Bloodkin had an apparently legendary residency at the High Hat Music Club.” -ALLAN JONES in UNCUT “It appears that Georgia-based southern rockers Bloodkin have set the benchmark for artistic rediscovery in 2009.” -GLIDE magazine “Bloodkin’s 20-year history has been a roller coaster of the good, the bad and the ugly. There have been personal demons to tame, real tragedy to endure, and a very uphill battle to keep their creative relationship intact. But through it all, their music remains a genuine article of southern gothic narrative wrapped in the cloak of powerful and raw guitar-driven rock & roll music. With 9 albums of material to their credit Bloodkin is an undeniably important, although generally under-recognized, part of the contemporary southern musical landscape.” -JAMBASE “Easily the most under-appreciated rock n roll band of the last 15 years, Athens GA’s Bloodkin is finally getting some much-deserved attention with this soulful, demon-expelling record [Baby...]. I should let you in on a little secret--all of their albums are this good.” -STEVE LABATE in PASTE MAGAZINE “As if the legacy of Faulkner or even the Beats were alive on vinyl rather than in ink.” -STEPHEN M. DEUSNER in PITCHFORK “Bloodkin...has emerged from the flames with one of the best albums of its career [Baby...], rivaling its 1996 classic Creeperweed in sound, songwriting, and overall vibe.” -JAMIE LEE in HITTIN’ THE NOTE “Bloodkin, who formed in the early 1990s, are best known for their influence on Widespread Panic, who have covered a bunch of Bloodkin tunes. As revealed on BABY, THEY TOLD US WE WOULD RISE AGAIN, the bands share a bit of Southern-rock influence, but at its heart the Bloodkin sound is more akin to alt-country contemporaries like Son Volt, or even relative youngsters Cross Canadian Ragweed. The Crazy Horse crunch of the guitars and the willingness to let a groove develop slowly mark the band as distinctly '70s-influenced, but the thoughtful songwriting that sets them apart from the country-rock masses isn't tied to any one era.” -CD UNIVERSE

DescriptionHailing from Raleigh, NC, American Aquarium’s southern musical perspective is a blend of honest songwriting, an unwavering work ethic, and a genuine love of rock & roll. Whether you call it alt-country, Americana, or roots rock, one thing is for certain: Their music is a fresh voice that borrows from many forms of the American songbook. 25-year old songwriter and band leader, BJ Barham, brings songs to the five other band mates who breathe life into a performance that is equal parts Springsteen-esque rock bravado, old-school country lyrical heartbreak, and indie-rock introspection. From the college coeds to tattooed bikers and hipsters, the band has demonstrated their ability to cross boundaries. With 4 years, 4 albums, and over 600 shows under their belts, American Aquarium is the continuance of the road warrior meets studio craftsman ethic that has long been a part of the rock & roll and country music cultures. They are a band and crew that spend their lives between a van with no air-conditioning and stages all across the country. Their collaboration forms a wholly new and polished version of what Americana might start to look like in the years to come.

DescriptionThese songs come from sticky Southern towns and broken hearts. Crowded streets that know no names. Lonely hours in sub-leased apartments with dirty, white walls. Hard living and the long road home. These songs are stories. Some are true, some out of nowhere. They came to me and I wrote them down and asked some friends to help me get them on record. And there is not too much more to say. I think the songs speak for themselves.

10-08-2010

DescriptionAfter a couple of years playing on the lowcountry South Carolina music scene, Ryan Bailey & Cumberland Belle are finally ready to unveil their debut EP, "Down To The Wire." Recorded at Charleston Sound, the lowcountry's premier recording studio, the bulk of the material was tracked live, with minimal overdubs rounding out the sound of the record. "A lot of our favorite records were made that way; a lot of Ryan Adams stuff, Tom Petty stuff, so it made sense for us to do the same. Plus we're just used to playing live, and we wanted to bring that same vibe to the tracks. Jeff (Hodges, chief engineer at Charleston Sound) had the same thought, so it just clicked," according to Bailey, singer and songwriter for the band. "I've started a couple of solo records over the past couple of years that are still unfinished, but this is the first thing really seeing the light of day, and I'm quite proud of it. It's raw and well put-together at the same time. I'm excited for people to hear it." In their relatively short amount of time together, the band has shared the stage with such diverse acts as Mark Bryan of Hootie and the Blowfish and country music mainstay Confederate Railroad, as well as notable South Carolina acts such as Danielle Howle and Owen Beverly. "We sort of ride that fine line between country and rock and roll, so I think that helps us appeal to fairly diverse audiences. There's a little something for everyone," Ryan elaborates. And while this is the band's first official recording as a unit, Ryan's song "Still Alive" has received radio play as far away as the Netherlands. "I'm like the Hasselhof of Dutch Alt-Country," Bailey jokes. As far as the individual songs, "Most of the tunes on this project were written as stories. Some of them are fictional and some are pseudo-reality, but I think they're all relatable," Ryan says. "There are a lot of people out there that are dealing with difficult things, and I hope these songs can bring some comfort in the fact that they're not alone, and there is hope beyond circumstances. I hope people can relate to these songs, and gain some comfort and hope from the stories they tell. Things get better, maybe not always immediately, but they do get better..." "Down To The Wire" releases on July 9 and will be available locally, at shows, and through itunes and all major digital retailers. Read more: http://www.myspace.com/ryanbaileyband#ixzz0uY9uX8od

DescriptionThe eight tracks on the debut album by The Villains is a look into the eyes and hearts of a band with real life stories to tell. From the breezy optimism of ‘Let’s Forget About It Tonight’ to the reflective musings of a band on the road in ‘Going Deaf For A Living’, The Villains weave a seamless backdrop of rock, pop and country that speaks to the soul. The sound is fun and reflective….they think you’ll agree. The six members ( Magno, Dan Call, Sean McNally, Michael Wilkes, Jimmy James Schmitt, and Alan Schaefer) all have a rich history of writing, recording ,and touring. Each of them has recorded and performed with many mainstream and indie artists from Nashville to New York, as well as touring the world together and individually. What started as a recording project for Magno, Dan, Sean, and Mike after three years on the road with Nashville recording artist Keni Thomas (along the way opening for Dwight Yoakum, Montgomery Gentry, and Trace Atkins… just to name a few) quickly turned into a record. The idea was thrown around to bring in two friends and co-writers ,Jimmy and Alan, and have them sing and play as well. In the spirit of acts such as The Band, The Eagles, and Fleetwood Mac, the blend of different singers and styles solidified the sound rather than compromising it. Three of the tunes are co-writes with Peter Stroud (guitarist for Sheryl Crow, Don Henley) and features him on guitar as well. The record was recorded by Chris Griffin (Live, Drivin N Cryin) and mixed by Chris and Russ Fowler (Stone Temple Pilots, Offspring) at Griffin Mastering Studios in Atlanta, between December 08 and May 09. The Villains hope you’ll kick back, have a beer, and enjoy the record. The experience was a true labor of love between friends and they look forward to coming to your town and sharing it with you! Till then, Cheers!

Many would gather 'round to listen to their new take on ol' time bluegrass. In May of 2004 the duo decided to take their act to local bars and restaurants, and have been performing frequently in Columbia ever since. In January of 2005 talented keyboardest Will Smith joined up with Papa String in an attempt by all to stretch the boundaries of traditional bluegrass music. This element of unconventional instrumentation has allowed the band to explore and expand areas of their own music that once seemed unattainable. The Papa String Band is not just confined to bluegrass, but has evolved into an ever-changing, spontaneous, and unpredictable sensory experience. DescriptionHis father's legacy lives on in the tools of his art. Big Bill has both Muddy's touring amp and the guitars on which he composed some of his earliest works. More importantly, Bill carries Muddy's spirit and love for the blues, and says he feels a spiritual bond with his father when he's on stage. "My dad had a reputation for being a very dignified person, a very proud man. He gave us kids all a certain inner strength to go out and do whatever we needed to do." Musically, his father's influence came somewhat later. "Whenever I got the chance to hear him, it struck me strongly." But Bill didn't start off with the idea of being a professional musician until years later. It wasn't until after his father's death in 1983 that Bill decided to explore his musical heritage. "It gave me such an empty feeling, like someone had pulled the bones out of my body, like something was missing. I never sat down and asked all the questions I had for him. Now I feel like I get a chance to talk to him through my music." This is a CD Release party for his "Born Lover". Davis Coen opens beginning at 9pm. Admission is $10.

DescriptionHomegrown Music Network CD Review Snake Oil July 7, 2009 The Lefty Williams Band spotlights scorching guitar, soulful lyrics, and wistful keyboard in their second studio release...In reviewing “Snake Oil,” I found myself impressed with Lefty Williams’ guitar tone and his vocal skills. He writes lyrics about feelings that are close to us all as humans. His perspectives seem wise and seasoned when discussing such matters. Maybe this is a reflection of the life that he has lived. In overcoming disability to create music, Jason “Lefty” Williams truly has a remarkable story to tell. -J. Evan Wade

DescriptionAthens, GA, sonic interpreter of indie freak folk music Efren is a folk group hinting on the psychedelic, from areas around Athens, GA. Reaching out into the musical world with introspective lyrics and brooding energy, efren entertains on many levels. In the past few month efren has recorded, released and supported the debut album ‘Thunder and Moan’ and now has a follow up EP ‘Always Been a Bleeder’. The recorded albums are hard and quiet, while the live show invigorates the music and delves deeper into the compositions, exploring the sonic textures. The players of this music have roots in jazz and blues, folk, bluegrass and rock. Efren touches on Southern Americana music, draws from indie lo-fi ideas, and respects the multitudes of great songwriters of our past. Lyrically driven, but emotionally wandering. Stories of trying to lose love, dreams of family past, tall boys, gambling, and whiskey stills… “…can invoke a trance-like state, similar to Bon Iver or Iron and Wine. The songs on Always Been a Bleeder are a gorgeous compilation of introspective, folk rock that injects a psychedelic dose into the standard southern groove.” ~Nadia Lelutiu, Silver Tongue “Roots with occasional layered vocals, his sound is that of one who's lived through much and dug into the depths of his heart to share it with us.” ~Echoryn of Athens .com “Efren’s acoustic guitar and occasionally despairingly dark lyricism deliver the opposite of so much tacky “Americana” and “New Roots” music. Rather than reinforce a feeling of place and point-of-view, they amplify the supreme disconnectedness that overwhelms everyone intermittently and a few of us permanently. In it, even things held in hand seem just out of reach.” ~Gordon Lamb, Flagpole Efren is presented as a full band, duo or solo. All formations intrigue ideas and experiences that affect the audience and venues with new sounds and performance. Efren is currently performing around the Southeast, and has plans of venturing out about the US and trying Europe in late 2010. Please, check out efren. Read more: http://www.myspace.com/efrenrock

With five albums under their belts, impressive independent albums sales, and a rapidly growing fan base, Stewart & Winfield are the South's answer to the No Depression, Midwestern sound.
